Lobbying - yes, but not in Poland

I am very interested in the issue of advocacy on behalf of organisations like Human Rights Watch, which are involved in finding information and analysing it. Their activity concerns human rights, and the rights of women, children and political prisoners. I am also interested in academic work and I hope I will be able to combine these two interests - saying Julia German. więcej...

A strategy for dialogue

The Polish Confederation of Private Employers Lewiatan, as a member of the government’s Tripartite Commission for Socio-Economic issues, would like to work out a strategic social compromise together with other employers’ organisations, trades unions and the government. The purpose would be to increase the rate of economic growth, which would finance the most pressing social needs of our country. The need for such an accord has been proposed steadfastly for several years by PKPP Lewiatan. więcej...

Capitalist Declaration

As entrepreneurs and employers, we expect that the state and local authorities create conditions supportive of business development: ensuring macroeconomic stability, maintaining budgetary discipline and avoiding making promises without the money to back them up. The duty of parliament and the government should be to improve Polish legislation in such a way that our companies and products can remain competitive. We will then be able to take full advantage of the opportunity offered by entry into the European Union. więcej...

Social Declaration

We are business people – but we do not regard commerce as an end in itself. We are announcing the SOCIAL DECLARATION in the certainty that systemic solutions directed at achieving a balanced development are particularly important for current and future generations of Poles: the linking of economic growth to increasing levels of employment as well as the inclusion of all citizens within the social fabric, without any discrimination or exception. więcej...

Building a brand

The Polonia University defines its mission in the educational sphere with the following words: an interdisciplinary approach – innovation – Europeanisation – professionalism. Our educational establishment’s activities are above all directed at cultivating in young people an ability to look critically at various problems which demand taking specific decisions. Our intention is that our alumni will be able to be responsible members of the European Community and will be able to live in accordance with responsible principles and participate in the shaping of Poland’s new countenance - saying Monsignore Andrzej Kryński, Rector of the Polonia University in Częstochowa (town south of Poland). więcej...

A successful start

The process of Poland’s entry into the European Union required an enormous amount of work on adjustment over several years in all of the candidate countries including Poland. It was not just a matter of implementing new forms of legislation, but also putting them into effect, as well as carrying out a process of real-life adaptations in areas of technology, the environment, quality, etc. These undertakings were very costly: in some areas – mainly affecting the environment – we will be implementing them for some years to come - saying Czesław Siekierski. więcej...

Family obligations

The Round Table Discussions were the realisation of Wierzbiański’s dream of a free Poland. I remember that we were then in Switzerland and Bolek was ringing Prof. Bronisław Geremek daily, asking should he start making plans to come to Poland for the agreement signing ceremony as the representative of the Polish American Congress – recalls Barbara. – In the end, we went and those were some of the happiest days of his life". więcej...

Page dressing

For many years the paper was pasted up from waxed strips produced by a Compugraphic system. It was modern at the beginning of the 80s but with time – like all computer systems – it started ageing rapidly. It was, in addition, time-consuming because it required texts to be retyped, recorded onto ever more old-fashioned disks, and then the cassettes with exposed photographic paper had to be passed thorough various chemicals. The process of moving to a computer based desktop publishing system ran slowly. In September 1996, the paper went over, for the first time, from manual pasting-up to a computer based approach. The Nowy Dziennik’s graphical format was still the same as a dozen or so years earlier, so it was time for a radical change in its page design. więcej...

Winning ideas

Zamość is a special city, as it has been put on the UNESCO register of world heritage sites. When this happend, the authorities in Warsaw stopped showing interest in the affairs of our city and its finances. Those sites, which have been recognized as historical monuments, are not covered by the government`s special protection programme. Kraków is the only city in Poland which receives a fixed annual subvention from the government for saving its heritage. It receives 8,9 mln euro. I would like to see Zamość become a beautiful city: that its inhabitants could be proud of it and have decent housing conditions. I would also like to lower the level of unemployment, which is now 16% - says Marcin Zamoyski, mayor of Zamość. więcej...
