Boredom

Poland is a country with only a few Nobel laureates. We only have six of them, among which four in literature: Władysław Reymont, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska. Lech Wałęsa was given the Nobel peace prize.

From the journalist point of view, Poland has become a boring country. Nothing spectacular is happening. Marek Belka’s government will survive until next year, one parliamentary investigating commission has finished its investigation, another has started. Very few people are interested. There are no big demonstrations on the streets of Warsaw, nor in other cities. The gap between politicians and citizens grows wider.

However, three million unemployed, the majority of which are frustrated, is a potential powder keg and we all sit on it, not only the government. On the other hand, to an outsider observer, the number and variety of car makes on the street and the great number of shopping malls, office buildings and houses being built might suggest, that Poland is a prosperous country and strenuously catching up with those EU countries that can be caught.

In this edition of our monthly, we publish a two side discussion about our EU membership. Eurodeputy Dariusz Rosati, of left-wing beliefs, is “for”; Eurodeputy Bogdan Pęk, in strong intellectual opposition to left-wing beliefs, is “against”. Which one will history will find in the right?

I encourage readers to peruse the conversation with Eurodeputy Janusz Lewandowski, the chair of the European Union Parliament Committee on Budgets.

Poland is a country with only a few Nobel laureates. We only have six of them, among which four in literature: Władysław Reymont, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska. Lech Wałęsa was given the Nobel peace prize. Only Maria Skłodowska-Curie, professor at the Paris Sorbonne, was given this prestigious prize in physics and chemistry (second time with her husband Pierre Curie).

That is why we are proud to present an interview with Wojciech Nawrot PhD., an inventor and rationalist. Nawrot is an example of a scientist, who was brave enough to continue scientific research on his own. On this path, he overcame many obstacles – from financial to the jealousy of fellow scientists, who could not accept his success. This is part of the Polish character: negative jealousy and discrediting of successes. Today Nawrot is an independent scientist, who built Author Technological Park, in which he organizes scientific conferences and seminars where scientists from Poland and abroad participate. Nawrot won seven gold medals at International Invention Exhibitions and is a member of the International Federation of Inventor’s Association.

Everybody can see what times we are to live in. Some interesting thoughts about future of Euro-Atlantic relations and problems within the EU, are shared by Prof. Jadwiga Staniszkis, sociologist.

Terrorism remains a major world problem. “You are accused of everything, that your education itself is a terrorist hotbed, favors spreading of hatred”. The Ambassador of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Poland, Osama A. Al-Sanosi replies – page 24.

Next, the Ambassador of Syria, Mohamad Ali Hamoui, justifies why his country plays a stabilizing role in the region.

Have a look on the last pages, on the political satire of our best comic-draughtsman Andrzej Mleczko. The nature of his characters can be interpreted by the look on their faces. Accompanied with relevant, short comments.

That`s Poland today. Bored.
